Ingredients
– 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1 tablespoon (12g) granulated sugar
– 1 tablespoon (10g) active dry yeast
– 1 cup (240ml) warm milk
– 4 tablespoons (57g) unsalted butter, softened
– 2 large eggs
– 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
– 1/2 cup (80g) raisins or currants (optional)
Instructions
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Create a well in the center.
2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, softened butter, and eggs.
3. Pour the milk mixture into the well in the flour mixture and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
6. Punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a smooth ball.
7. Place the dough balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
8. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
9. Make a cross shape on the top of each bun using a sharp knife or piping bag filled with a simple icing.
10. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until the buns are golden brown.
11. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For a more intense cardamom flavor, you can add up to 2 teaspoons of ground cardamom. Raisins or currants are a classic addition, but feel free to omit them if desired. The buns can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
