Indulge in the comforting flavors of this classic Dal Palak (Spinach Dal) recipe. This nutritious Indian lentil and spinach dish is packed with bold spices, fresh ingredients, and ready in just 15 minutes.
Ingredients
– 1 cup split red lentils (masoor dal)
– 2 cups fresh spinach, chopped
– 1 onion, diced
– 2 tomatoes, diced
– 3 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
– 1 teaspoon coriander powder
– 1 teaspoon garam masala
– 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
– 2 tablespoons oil
– Salt to taste
– Chopped cilantro for garnish
Instructions
1. Rinse the lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
2. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them crackle.
3. Add the diced onions and sauté until translucent.
4. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute.
5. Add the diced tomatoes, coriander powder, turmeric, red chili powder, and garam masala. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
6. Drain the lentils and add them to the pan. Pour in 2 cups of water and bring to a boil.
7. Reduce heat and let the lentils simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are cooked through.
8. Stir in the chopped spinach and season with salt to taste.
9. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with naan or rice.
Notes
For a creamier texture, you can blend a portion of the cooked lentils before adding the spinach. Adjust the spice level by adding more or less chili powder. This dish can be made in advance and reheated when ready to serve.
