Ingredients
– 2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/2 cup granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon baking powder
– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 1/2 cup olive oil
– 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
– 1/4 cup honey, plus more for drizzling
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and cloves.
3. Add the softened butter, olive oil, orange juice, and 1/4 cup of honey. Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix the ingredients until a smooth dough forms.
4. Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll them into oval shapes, about 1-inch thick.
5. Arrange the shaped cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
6. Bake the cookies for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
7. While the cookies are baking, prepare the honey syrup. In a small saucepan, heat the remaining honey over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it becomes slightly thinner in consistency.
8. Remove the cookies from the oven and immediately dip them in the warm honey syrup, turning to coat both sides.
9. Transfer the coated cookies to a wire rack or parchment paper to allow the excess syrup to drip off.
10. Serve the Traditional Greek Honey Cookies (Melomakarona) warm or at room temperature, and enjoy their delightful combination of buttery, crumbly texture and sweet, honey-infused flavor.
Notes
For a festive touch, you can garnish the cookies with chopped walnuts or almonds before serving. These cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
