Description

Indulge in the ultimate make-ahead breakfast with this decadent Overnight French Toast Casserole. Layers of fluffy bread soak up a rich, custardy filling, resulting in a perfectly baked, golden-brown dish that’s perfect for special occasions or lazy weekends.

Ingredients

– 1 loaf day-old French bread, cubed

– 8 large eggs

– 2 cups whole milk

– 1 cup heavy cream

– 3/4 cup granulated sugar

– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

– 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Arrange the cubed bread in the prepared baking dish.

3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, making sure all the pieces are evenly coated.

5. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or up to 24 hours.

6. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F.

7. Bake the casserole for 45-55 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.

8. Let the casserole cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use a combination of challah and brioche bread. You can also add chopped pecans or walnuts to the top for extra crunch. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
