Description
Mujadara is a beloved Lebanese dish that combines aromatic spices, hearty lentils, and fluffy rice into a comforting and satisfying vegetarian meal. This easy-to-make recipe delivers authentic Middle Eastern flavors that the whole family will love.
Ingredients
– 1 cup brown lentils, rinsed
– 1 cup basmati rice, rinsed
– 1 large onion, thinly sliced
– 3 cloves garlic, minced
– 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 1 teaspoon ground cumin
– 1 teaspoon ground coriander
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
– 1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
– Salt and pepper to taste
– Chopped parsley for garnish
– Fried onions for garnish
Instructions
1. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized.
2. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute, until fragrant.
3. Stir in the rinsed lentils, rice, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cayenne. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Pour in the vegetable broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils and rice are tender and the liquid is absorbed.
5. Remove the pan from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes.
6. Fluff the Mujadara with a fork and transfer to a serving dish. Garnish with chopped parsley and fried onions.
7. Serve hot, with pita bread, yogurt, and a fresh salad on the side.
Notes
For added flavor, try topping the Mujadara with a drizzle of pomegranate molasses or tahini sauce. You can also customize the spices to your taste, adding more or less of each one.
