Ingredients
– 1 1/2 cups warm water
– 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
– 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
– 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 teaspoons salt
– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
– 10 cups water
– 1/2 cup baking soda
– 1 egg, beaten
– Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
Instructions

2. – In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
3. – Add the melted butter to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
4. – Gradually add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
5. – Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
6. – Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
7. – Preheat oven to 450°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
8. – Bring the 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil in a large pot or Dutch oven.
9. – Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 24-inch rope and shape into a pretzel.
10. – Working in batches, boil the pretzels for 30 seconds per side. Transfer to the prepared baking sheets.
11. – Brush the pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
12. – Bake for 12-15 minutes until deep golden brown.
Notes
For softer pretzels, reduce baking time by 2-3 minutes. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces like mustard, cheese sauce, or honey butter.
