Description

These French Onion Soup Bites are a delectable, bite-sized version of the classic French onion soup. With a crisp, buttery pastry base, rich caramelized onions, and melted Gruyere cheese on top, they make the perfect appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

– 2 large onions, thinly sliced

– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

– 1 cup beef broth

– 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

– 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese

– 2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves

– Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 25-30 minutes until the onions are deeply caramelized and sweet.

2. Pour in the beef broth and simmer for 5 minutes, until the liquid is reduced by half. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Unfold the puff pastry sheet and cut into 12 equal squares.

4. Place the pastry squares on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spoon the caramelized onion mixture onto the center of each square, then top with a sprinkle of Gruyere cheese.

5. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

6. Garnish the baked French Onion Soup Bites with fresh thyme leaves. Serve warm.

Notes

These bites can be made ahead and reheated in the oven before serving. They also pair well with a small bowl of warm beef broth for dipping.
