Description

Indulge in the rich, aromatic flavors of this Egyptian beef goulash (phyllo beef pie) – a comforting and flavorful main dish that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

– 1 pound ground beef

– 1 large onion, diced

– 3 cloves garlic, minced

– 2 teaspoons paprika

– 1 teaspoon ground cumin

– 1 teaspoon ground coriander

– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

– 1 cup beef broth

– 1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes

– Salt and black pepper, to taste

– 8 sheets phyllo dough

– 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned, about 5 minutes.

2. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until the onion is translucent, about 3 minutes.

3. Stir in the paprika, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cayenne. Cook for 1 minute to toast the spices.

4. Pour in the beef broth and diced tomatoes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.

5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

6. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in a 9-inch pie dish, letting the edges hang over the sides. Brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.

7. Spoon the beef goulash filling into the phyllo-lined pie dish. Fold the overhanging phyllo dough over the filling.

8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the phyllo is golden-brown and crispy.

9. Let the pie cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use a combination of ground beef and ground lamb. Serve with a fresh salad or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
