Indulge in the ultimate crispy, cheesy goodness of Deep Fried Pizza Puff Pockets (Panzerotti) – a delectable Italian street food that’s ready in just 30 minutes! These golden-brown pockets are filled with melted mozzarella and a zesty marinara sauce, making them the perfect appetizer or snack.
Ingredients
– 2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon instant yeast
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 3/4 cup warm water
– 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
– 1 cup marinara sauce
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, and salt. Add the warm water and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
3. Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.
4. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a circle, about 6 inches in diameter.
5. Place 2-3 tablespoons of mozzarella cheese in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and crimp the edges to seal.
6. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F. Fry the panzerotti in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
7. Drain the fried panzerotti on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
For extra flavor, try adding some Italian seasoning or freshly chopped basil to the cheese filling. You can also experiment with different cheese blends, such as a mix of mozzarella and parmesan.
